Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball sweeps past Johnson & Wales in two matches

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 27, 2017) – After starting The Sun Conference slate with two five-set nail-biters, the Webber International University women's volleyball team seems to have settled into a groove as the Warriors have now rattled off three straight sweeps in conference action. Webber defeated Johnson & Wales University 3-0 (25-12, 25-5, 25-23) in match one, and 3-0 (25-19, 25-5, 25-17) in match two during a rare volleyball double header on Wednesday night at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

With the two wins, Webber's record rose to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference as the Warriors remained only one of two TSC teams without a conference loss. Johnson & Wales fell to 3-10 and 0-4. Webber has already defeated conference preseason favorite, the College of Coastal Georgia, and the only other TSC school with a winning record, Southeastern University, so far this season.

"Tonight was all about focus and mental toughness for our team," said Head Volleyball Coach Lindsey Martin. "We are working on developing a winning mentality on every point. To hold such an intense mental focus and toughness can be difficult and exhausting, but it is definitely necessary when training to become the best that we can be."

In match one, Webber cruised in the opening two sets and led 15-11 in the third before needing to mount a comeback after trailing 22-21.

During the first set of the second match, Webber withstood an 8-3 Wildcats' run to tie it at 17-17 by answering with four straight points and ending the set on an 8-2 run. In the third set, Webber notched eight straight points to kick off a 12-1 run to take a 15-5 advantage. JWC would battle back to 23-17, however, before back-to-back kills by Brittany Taksas finished it off.

Tonight, it was very apparent when we were focused and when we lost mental focus," said Martin. "Our level of play dropped significantly during the sets we lost it, but it was refreshing to see the team bounce back and find a way to win. It's always a good night when you can walk away with two wins in The Sun Conference."

Taksas would lead both teams in kills in match one with 12, and added nine in match two. Emily Bowen recorded 10 kills in the opener while Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu did the same in the second match. Taksas also added two solo blocks in the first match while Brianna Roque added three block assists in the second and Cameron Neely had two.

Reigning TSC Setter of the Week Carlee Baxter dished out 29 assists in match one and 26 in the second. She also had a combined total of 13 kills on the night, and had eight digs in the second match.

Michelle Calderon led both teams with 11 digs in match one while Kaxandra Naranjo had one of her best nights of the season as she recorded five service aces in match one and finished with a career-high and match-high 13 digs in the finale.

Webber will host rival Warner University on Saturday, September 30, at 2 p.m., and will then open up October still at home for a 7 p.m. match against Keiser University on Wednesday, October 4.
