WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (September 23, 2017) – It took the minimum amount of sets for the Webber International University women's volleyball team to defeat Keiser University and move to 3-0 in The Sun Conference. The Warriors were victorious over the Hawks, 3-0, (25-13, 25-22, 25-12) on Saturday at the Countess de Hornle Student Life Center.
The Warriors (8-3 overall, 3-0 TSC) earned their sixth sweep of the season while Keiser (4-11, 1-1) was swept for the fifth time on the year.
"It's always great a get a win on the road against a worthy TSC opponent," said Head Coach
Lindsey Martin. "Today's match gave us the opportunity to reap the rewards of some very specific things we've been working on in practice. Our goal is to get better every day, every practice, every match, and I think we are working to achieve that every chance we get."
Defensively, four Warriors reached double-digit digs as
Carlee Baxter (14),
Gilmary Ramos (12; career-high),
Michelle Calderon (11) and
Jessica Terry (10; career-high) each helped to set up the Warriors' blistering attack. Webber would go on to finished set two with a .343 attack percentage, and was even better in set three at .435 percent.
Brittany Taksas was impressive defensively as well with four blocks, and Baxter had a great all-around match as she added 29 assists and six kills to go along with her team-leading dig total, a three-set career-high for the category.
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu had 15 kills, and was followed by
Cameron Neely with seven.
Amber Lake added two service aces.
In the opening set, Webber raced out to a 4-0 lead, and the closest the Seahawks would get in the set was 5-3. From there, the Warriors responded with a 6-1 run, stretching the margin to 11-4.
The Warriors held a 13-9 lead in the second set before Keiser went on a 6-2 run to tie the set at 15-15. Webber then settled down and rattled off the next three points. KU came to within 19-18, but the Warriors would prevail.
Next up, Webber will host Johnson & Wales University in a rare volleyball doubleheader at 5 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27. The reason for the doubleheader is to make up a match that was postponed due to Hurricane Irma, originally scheduled for September 16 in North Miami.
