Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s soccer takes down Warner for second time

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 23, 2017) – Just like the first meeting in early September, the Royals struck first early in the first half, but also just like the previous time, freshman Madison Pike responded with two first-half goals to put the Webber International University women's soccer team ahead for good over Warner University. Webber was victorious by a final score of 4-1 over rival Warner on a windy Saturday morning at Legion Field.

Webber improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in The Sun Conference, while Warner fell to 1-3 and 0-2. The Warriors' women's soccer team has now won four straight over the Royals, and has done its fair share in helping Webber in its annual Crooked Cup rivalry with its neighbor across the lake.

Head Coach Ashley Cockrell was excited to see a large turnout from the crowd to support her team in their home opener.

"We appreciate the support from the community so much," said Cockrell. "It was our first home game and it was so cool to see so many people in the stands at Webber Field!  We really appreciate it so much!"

Saturday's match started off very similarly to the first time the two teams met as Warner again scored only five minutes into the match, and again, it was Pike who answered twice. This time around, however, Pike and her two goals were not alone as senior Laura Borders got in on the action with two goals in the second half.

"I thought we started a little slow, and I was frustrated that we gave up an early goal," said Cockrell. "However, I saw some tenacity in our team today. They re-organized and responded to a very disciplined Warner team. I am very proud that the girls showed that they took what we learned in the FGCU game and used it to improve today. I am always relieved when our team is able to bounce back and not be defined by a big loss. It shows that they are focused on what is ahead. Today was another big-time team effort against a good team. Warner never quit running at us. We still have a lot of work to do as we continue to move through conference play."

Borders also assisted on Pike's second goal, and finished with a match-high seven shots, five on goal. Pike would finish with five total shots, four on goal, Francesca Mascali would fire three shots, and Amanda Cypriano and Joanna Pais both added two.

The Warriors will welcome Southeastern University to Babson Park on Wednesday, September 27, at 3 p.m.
