BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 20, 2017) – For the second straight match to start the 2017 conference season, the Webber International University women's volleyball team was victorious at home in five sets, this time over the College of Coastal Georgia, 3-2 (28-26, 25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 15-12) on Wednesday night at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
With the win, the Warriors moved to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in The Sun Conference action, while Coastal Georgia fell to 1-7 and 0-1. The Warriors were picked No. 2 in the conference's preseason poll behind Coastal Georgia, who is playing through its first year in the TSC and has played the No. 1, No. 5, No 8 and No. 19 teams in the NAIA already this season.
In addition to the usual suspects of
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu,
Michelle Calderon and
Carlee Baxter, the trio was joined with well-rounded performances by
Cameron Neely and
Brittany Taksas among others.
Salanoa-Sagopolu recorded over 20 kills for the second straight match as she finished with 21, including nine in the first set alone, and Baxter nearly finished with 50 assists for the second straight match as she ended with 49. Baxter also added two service aces and 14 digs while Calderon had 21 digs to lead the team yet again.
Neely finished with 16 kills on the night while Taksas finished with 14. It was, however, a total team effort for the Warriors as
Kobi Allston and
Amber Lake each recorded nine digs,
Gilmary Ramos had eight digs,
Emily Bowen had six kills and four digs, and
Brianna Roque added two block assists.
In the all-important fifth set, Taksas and Neely really made their presence felt as Taksas got Webber started with three kills on the first four points of the set, and then three kills by Neely made it 9-4 Warriors. The duo of Taksas and Neely finished with five and four kills in the set, respectively, and a Mariner set error followed by another kill by Neely finished off the match as Webber won a fifth set by a final score of 15-12 for the second straight match.
"Although I would prefer not have all of our conference matches go five sets, it's good to know that this team can fight for a win," said Head Coach
Lindsey Martin. "Our team can find the fire within themselves and rally together and fight together against any opponent, whether it's Southeastern or College of Coastal Georgia. We are learning to trust and believe in ourselves and our teammates, which will only help us in our quest to the top of the conference."
Next up, Webber will travel to Keiser University for its first road conference match of the season on Saturday, September 23, at 2 p.m. before returning home for four consecutive TSC home matches.
