Volleyball earns nonconference sweep

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 5, 2017) – In the opening match of the 2017 Royals Classic, the Webber International University women's volleyball team hosted Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas), and earned a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-11) sweep over the Saints on Thursday night at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Webber and Our Lady of the Lake University (Red River Athletic Conference) entered Thursday's match with similar records as the Warriors were 12-3 overall, the Saints were 11-5 overall, and both teams were undefeated in their respective conferences at 7-0. Webber's record rose to 13-3 while Our Lady of the Lake University's fell to 11-6.

Head Volleyball Coach Lindsey Martin had this to say, "Tonight was a great non-conference win for us against a credible and worthy opponent. The consistency in focus and intensity was something our team has been working on for weeks, and it was a delight to see it all come together tonight. We really played well as a team and the hope and expectation is that we will carry that into our next two matches this weekend."

Junior Brittany Taksas led the Warriors in kills for the third straight match as she finished with a match-high of 13. Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu was not far behind with 10 kills, while Cameron Neely added eight. With another attack percentage over .500 percent for the third straight match (.550 percent on Thursday), Taksas was also impressive defensively, chipping in with five blocks, while Neely had three.

Carlee Baxter reached 30 assists for the third straight match (each in three sets) as she finished with 32, and she also added 14 digs while Michelle Calderon had 17. Amber Lake added eight digs while Emily Bowen had five kills.

With the victory on Thursday, Webber won its eighth straight match since losses to current No. 2 Lindsey Wilson College and current No. 24 Campbellsville University. The Warriors' only losses this season have come against teams who are nationally ranked or receiving votes.

Webber's stretch of four matches in four days will continue tomorrow, Friday, October 6, as the Warriors host Saint Thomas University at 6 p.m. in a The Sun Conference matchup. Webber will then enter back into the Royals Classic, hosted by Warner University, to battle No. 19 Bellevue University, at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, in what has been dubbed as The Sun Conference's Volleyball Game of the Week. Bellevue has won 12 of its last 13 matches, and is 5-0 in matches that go all five sets.
