MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 28, 2017) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team led two sets to zero, but then had to complete a comeback in a fifth set as the Warriors were victorious over Saint Thomas University, 3-2 (25-18, 25-23, 19-25, 14-25, 17-15), on Saturday at the Fernandez Family Center.
The win served as a little bit of payback for the Warriors, whose first loss in The Sun Conference came at home against the Bobcats in three sets back on October 6. The victory for Webber (21-5 overall, 13-2 TSC) on Saturday also represented the first conference loss of the season for Saint Thomas (15-11, 12-1) as second-place Webber pulled a little bit closer to the first-place team in The Sun Conference.
In the fifth set, Saint Thomas scored on four of five points to seemingly take control at 14-10, but that is where things got interesting. Webber netted four consecutive points to tie it as
Brianna Roque earned a kill,
Cameron Neely and
Brittany Taksas combined on a block,
Carlee Baxter earned a kill, and then
Emily Bowen capped it off with a kill.
Saint Thomas answered Webber's comeback with a kill to go ahead at 15-14, but the Warriors refused to give in as Taksas earned a kill off an assist from Baxter, and then the duo of Taksas and Baxter combined on a block to put Webber ahead 16-15.
On the final point of the match,
Gilmary Ramos earned a service ace to seal the Bobcats' fate and help Webber complete the statement win.
"Matches like these create opportunities for teams to become championship teams," said Head Women's Volleyball Coach
Lindsey Martin. "The fight we showed today, being down 10-14 in the fifth and to come back to win was tremendous. This is the type of fight, intensity and determination we need to make it through the rest of our season, and into the conference tournament."
The match began with Webber taking each of the first four points of the match and then holding leads of 11-4 and 17-10 in the opening set as the Bobcats never got closer than four for the rest of the frame.
In the second set, the Warriors trailed 5-0 early and then trailed 13-8. Webber did not take a lead in the set until the very end as after trailing 22-19, the Warriors rattled off five straight points featuring kills by Bowen, Taksas and
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu, to go ahead 24-22, and then two points later another kill by Taksas ended it.
In the third set, Saint Thomas finished up on a 5-1 run and then dominated the fourth frame to set up the fifth and final game.
Webber put up huge numbers all around and saw numerous new career-highs set as five Warriors reached double digits in digs and four did the same in kills. Additionally, five Warriors had two or more blocks, led by Taksas with a career-high of six.
Bowen, a freshman from Olathe, Kansas, was great both offensively and defensively as she set new-career-highs in both kills (16) and digs (14).
Michelle Calderon set a new career-high with 43 digs to lead both teams, and was aided by
Amber Lake with a career-high 17 digs, Ramos with 13 and Baxter with 11. Baxter also dished out a new career-high in assists with 58, and added two blocks.
Like Bowen, Taksas finished with 16 kills, and was followed by Salanoa-Sagapolu with 13 and Roque (.346 attack percentage) with a career-high 11 kills. Roque, like Baxter, also finished with two blocks on the match.
With only two matches remaining in the regular season, Webber will take a break from conference action to travel to Temple Terrace, Florida, and face Florida College at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 2. Senior Day for the Warriors will follow on Saturday, November 4, as Webber hosts Florida Memorial College at 2 p.m. in the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
