TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (November 2, 2017) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team stumbled in the first set but then rebounded in a big way to win the next three as the Warriors defeated Florida College 3-1 (13-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-20) on Thursday night.
The win moved Webber to 22-5 on the season as the Warriors will now enter their final match of the regular season looking to head into the postseason on their fourth four-match winning streak of the year.
"Tonight was a great matchup for us," said Head Women's Volleyball Coach
Lindsey Martin. "Florida College is a strong team that came at us very aggressively. I'll admit, it wasn't what we were expecting, but once we got our bearings, we were able to bounce back with a level of intensity and focus I'd expect out of our team."
After dropping the opening set by 12 points, Webber held the Falcons to 11 in the second set and 17 in the third to take control, and then completed the night in a tight fourth set.
"I'm very proud of how we handled a rowdy gym full of loud fans as well as having to regain our momentum after an ugly first set," said Martin. "Now our focus can turn to our last conference match on Saturday and honoring our seniors."
Webber's Senior Day will take place on Saturday, November 4, as the Warriors host The Sun Conference foe Florida Memorial University at 2 p.m. in the Sabbagh Athletic Center. It will be the last opportunity for Warrior fans to watch
Michelle Calderon,
Brianna Roque,
Megan Dixon,
Kyleigh Stottlemyer and
Kaxandra Naranjo on their home court.
A win by the Warriors on Saturday coupled with a loss by Saint Thomas University against the College of Coastal Georgia would make Webber The Sun Conference regular-season co-champions. The Sun Conference Tournament is slated to begin with the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, November 7, followed by the semifinals on Friday, November 10 and the championship match on Saturday, November 11.
