Women’s volleyball completes season sweep of Warner, reaches 20-win mark

LAKE WALES, Fla. (October 25, 2017) – For the second straight season, the Webber International University women's volleyball team has reached 20 wins. Also for the second straight season, the Warriors have swept Warner University as this time, Webber was victorious by a score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-13) on Wednesday night at Turner Athletic Center.

With its second sweep over the Royals this season (first time on Sept. 30), Webber improved its overall record to 20-5 and its record in The Sun Conference to 12-2 as the Warriors remain in second in the conference standings while also leading the league in wins. Warner fell to 4-16 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

Webber was benefited on Wednesday by a great crowd that made the short trip to the rival school across the lake.

"Cross-town, rival matches are always exciting and hard fought," said Head Coach Lindsey Martin. "The amount of support we got from our Webber teams coming out to cheer us on to victory was tremendous. I'm proud we were able to reestablish our level of focus and intensity, and this will hopefully carry us into our match this weekend."

Carlee Baxter led the way with 34 assists and 11 digs, and has now dished 32 or more assists in 12 straight matches, Michelle Calderon had 16 digs, and similarly to Baxter, saw her streak of 15 or more digs move up to 12 straight matches.

Megan Dixon had her most productive performance of the season so far with seven digs, four more than she had coming into the match. Amber Lake also had seven digs while Gilmary Ramos finished with six, making it five Warriors with six or more digs on the evening.

Reigning TSC Attacker of the Week Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu had nine kills along with nine from Cameron Neely, while Emily Bowen had seven kills, Brittany Taksas also added seven kills and three blocks, and Brianna Roque matched her career-high with six kills while also chipping in with two blocks.

The Warriors were dominant from nearly every angle on Wednesday as Webber finished with an attack percentage of .325 percent in the opening set, and then after winning a tough second set, cruised in the final set with a percentage of .312. Comparatively speaking, the Royals posted attack percentages of .105 percent in the first set, .000 percent in the second, and .088 in the third as the Warriors finished the match with seven consecutive points.

The turning point on Wednesday came in the second set when Webber trailed 18-13 but then rattled off six straight points to spark an 8-1 run to make it 21-19 Warriors. Warner answered with a 4-1 run to lead 23-22 before kills by Salanoa-Sagapolu and Baxter, followed by a Royals' attack error, finished off the set in Webber's favor.

In the opening set, a 5-0 run gave Webber a 12-7 lead, but then after Webber led 19-10, an 8-3 run by the Royals made it 22-18 before kills by Salanoa-Sagapolu, Neely and Baxter on three of the next four points ended it.

Next up, Webber will get its rematch against the first team to defeat the Warriors in The Sun Conference action this season, Saint Thomas University, as the Warriors travel to Miami Gardens, Florida, for a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday, October 28. The Bobcats were victorious over the Warriors 3-0 in Babson Park back on October 6 during a stretch in which Webber played four matches in four days, and one day after falling to Saint Thomas, bounced back to take down the then 19th-ranked team in the country, Bellevue University.
