AVE MARIA, Fla. (October 18, 2017) – Less than a week after the first meeting between the two teams in which the Warriors fell down one set to none, the Webber International University women's volleyball team had no such slow start this time around as the Warriors swept the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University, 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-9), on Wednesday night at Tom Golisano Field House.
With the win, Webber improved to 19-4 overall and 11-1 in The Sun Conference as the Warriors are now only one victory shy of their second straight 20-win season. Ave Maria fell to 4-14 and 4-7 after winning its previous two matches.
In the opening set, the Gyrenes threatened late down 21-18 before Webber rattled off three straight points, capped by kills from
Cameron Neely and
Carlee Baxter, to pull away. A kill by
Emily Bowen two points later ended the set.
In the final two sets, Webber led the entire way as a 9-3 run featuring four kills from
Brittany Taksas in the second set turned a 13-10 lead into a 22-13 advantage.
"Today was a great win on the road against that team that has performed well in the TSC recently," said Head Women's Volleyball Coach
Lindsey Martin. "We will continue to work hard in practice and prepare for our string of away matches."
It was the usual suspects for the Warriors statistically as Baxter had 37 assists,
Michelle Calderon had 16 digs, and Taksas had 13 kills followed by
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu with 12.
Baxter's assist total was her 10th straight match with 30 or more helpers while Calderon's dig total was also her 10th straight match of 15 or more. Salanoa-Sagapolu has recorded double-digit kills 11 straight times, while Taksas has done the same in 10 straight.
Also for the Warriors, Bowen added eight kills and two blocks, while
Brianna Roque also had two blocks, and
Amber Lake and
Gilmary Ramos had eight and seven digs, respectively.
The Warriors will continue on their five-match road swing as Webber battles the Coastal of College Georgia at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, in a match with potential implications on the conference standings. Coastal Georgia was selected first in the TSC preseason coaches' poll, but has since fallen to .500 (4-4) in the conference, while the Warriors lead the conference in wins.
