Volleyball defeats Fighting Saints

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 15, 2017) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team took a break from The Sun Conference action to host the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) Fighting Saints as a part of Webber's Homecoming Weekend. The Warriors were victorious by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-18) on Sunday at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

One night after setting a career-high in digs for three-set matches, Michelle Calderon did the same for four-set matches as she finished with 27. Calderon was followed by Carlee Baxter with 17 digs and Amber Lake with 13 digs. Also on the defensive side of things, Brianna Roque had five blocks, while Cameron Neely added three and Brittany Taksas had two.

Baxter also dished out 38 assists, with the majority of those going to the combination of Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu (14 kills), Neely (12 kills) and Taksas (11 kills).

With the win in what was the first nonconference match for the Warriors this season that was not a part of a tournament, Webber improved to 18-4 on the season while Saint Francis fell to 13-18.

"Today was a great opportunity to get another win against a nonconference opponent," said Head Coach Lindsey Martin. "Although it was another slow start for us, we found our groove and settled into our more consistent style of play."

Trailing one set to none, the Warriors quickly got back on track and held an 11-4 lead in the second set. Webber then led 19-12 before the Fighting Saints went on a 7-2 run to get within two at 21-19.

The Warriors, however, held on to win the second set and then cruised in the final two sets thanks to scoring each of the first nine points of the third set and each of the first five points in the fourth.

After playing in six straight home matches at one point earlier in the season, Webber will now embark upon a five-match road swing that begins with Ave Maria University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18.

Martin concluded, "After competing in nine matches in the last 14 days, we are excited to get back into a normal practice and competition schedule next week to improve our skills."
