LAKELAND, Fla. (October 11, 2017) – Playing in The Sun Conference's Volleyball Game of the Week for the second straight week and third time this season, the Webber International University women's volleyball team took Southeastern University's best shot early, but proved to be too much for the Fire to handle in the end as the Warriors were victorious 3-2 (21-25, 15-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-10) on Wednesday evening.
It was the second five-set win for Webber (15-4 overall, 8-1 TSC) over Southeastern (13-6, 5-3) this season, and also represented the second season sweep in a row for the Warriors over the Fire. Southeastern was previously 5-1 with four consecutive wins since its loss to the Warriors back in mid-September.
Webber seemed to be having an off night two sets in as the Fire handled the Warriors fairly easily in the second set; however, things changed in the third set as the Warriors led 14-7. Southeastern cut the Warriors' advantage down to two points on four different occasions, but a Webber kill and an error by the Fire gave the set to the Warriors and kept the match going.
In the fourth set, Webber again led 14-7 and never let the Fire get any closer than within three the rest of the way.
With all of the momentum on its side, Webber jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth and final set, and never looked back as
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu earned three kills in the final four points of the match to help seal the victory.
"It's been awhile since we've had an opportunity to win on the road, and tonight was huge for us," said Head Volleyball Coach
Lindsey Martin. "Although we had a very slow and rough start, having the team come together and refuse to give up allowed us to show some character and tenacity late in the match. We will plan to take this momentum with us into the rest of the matches we have this weekend."
Brittany Taksas, the reigning TSC Attacker of the Week, led the Warriors with 19 kills while Salanoa-Sagapolu had 14 to move her streak of matches with 10-plus kills up to seven.
Emily Bowen also had big moments throughout the match, finishing with eight kills, while Taksas had another great all-around match as she helped out defensively with four blocks and also hit .500 percent, a feat she has accomplished in five of her last seven matches.
Carlee Baxter had 47 assists and was one of three Warriors with double-digit digs as she had 14,
Michelle Calderon had 15, and
Amber Lake had 10.
Next up, the Warriors will get back to business with another tough week of matches as Webber hosts Ave Maria University at 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, travels to Florida Memorial University for a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday, October 14, and then as a part of Webber's Homecoming Weekend festivities, the Warriors will host the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) in non-conference action at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 15.
