Four Warriors reach double-digit kills in win over Ave Maria

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 12, 2017) – After dropping the opening set, the Webber International University women's volleyball team held Ave Maria University to a maximum of 14 points in each of the final three sets as the Warriors defeated the Gyrenes by a score of 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-13, 25-14) on Thursday at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Webber got strong contributions all around as four players reached double-digit kills. Freshman Cameron Neely led both teams with 15 kills, while junior Brittany Taksas and freshman Emily Bowen (career-high) each had 11, and junior Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu had 10. Taksas also added five blocks and a hitting percentage of .364 percent, and Neely hit .312 percent.

Carlee Baxter had 40 assists as she continues to average right around 10 assists per set, and she also added 17 digs. Baxter has now dished 40 or more assists in three straight matches, and has reached double digits in digs five straight times.

Michelle Calderon finished with 18 digs, while Amber Lake had 13 digs and came up huge with five service aces. Calderon has finished with 15 or more digs in seven straight matches, while Lake has reached double-digit digs three straight times.

In the opening set, Webber led 6-2 before a 6-0 Ave Maria run put the Gyrenes ahead for good as the Warriors never got any closer than within two the rest of the way.

The Warriors, however, quickly turned things around, using a 7-1 run midway through the second set, followed by a 7-0 run to end the set and even everything up at one set apiece. Four different Warriors earned a kill during each of Webber's aforementioned runs in the second set.

Webber jumped out to a lead of 8-1 in the third set as Brianna Roque, Bowen and Baxter recorded back-to-back-to-back kills, and then led 7-3 in the final set after back-to-back kills by Taksas. Back-to-back aces from Lake made it 19-8 in the fourth set.

With the win, Webber improves to 16-4 overall and 9-1 in the Sun Conference, while Ave Maria falls to 2-13 and 2-6.

Next up, Webber plays at Florida Memorial University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, and then welcomes the Fighting Saints of the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) to the Sabbagh Atheltic Center as a part of Homecoming Weekend. Webber and USF will square off a 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 15.
