BABSON PARK, Fla. – Webber International University's Athletic Director,
Bill Heath, has announced that Mrs. Camilla Grace Webber McConnell will be inducted into the Webber International University Athletics Hall of Fame. Roger Babson, the grandfather of Mrs. McConnell, founded Webber College, and named it after his newly born granddaughter, Camilla Grace Webber, in 1927. Thus McConnell and Webber share the same birthdate.
Three buildings on Webber's campus in Babson Park, Fla. are named after her. Two residence halls, Grace and Camilla, and also the McConnell classroom building is named after her.
Camilla graduated from Webber College in 1949. She worked for Roger Babson, as his secretary, but over the next 20 years, she advanced to registrar, director of admissions, and vice-president.
In 1969 she joined the board of trustees for Webber College. By 1971 she was chairman of the board of trustees and continued in that position until 1993. Though not the chair anymore, she still remains as a member of the board of trustees for Webber International University.
So, you wonder why is Camilla being inducted into the Webber Athletics Hall of Fame? Because she was a student-athlete at Webber College and she loved sports. Webber did not offer intercollegiate sports in the 1940's, but they did have club teams that would compete in a few sports. Camilla played on the Webber Tennis team in 1948 and 1949. She loved playing volleyball in the sand. Even after she graduated, she kept the volleyball courts clean and kept the nets in great shape. She was a real competitor in ping-pong and would enter tournaments. A very competitive lady. She was an avid horseback rider often taking long rides with Roger Babson himself. Camilla helped start the women's basketball program at Webber.
"So, we hope you understand that we are not only inducting the lady our University is named after, we are inducting a woman that was passionate about sports, loved to compete, and absolutely loved Webber. She was a true competitor." Said
Bill Heath.
Mrs. McConnell will unfortunately not be able to attend the Hall of Fame induction, but current Webber President, Dr. Keith Wade, will represent her at the ceremonies.
