Women’s Basketball Advances to Sun Conference Championship Game With Hard Fought Win Over St. Thomas

LAKELAND, Fla. – Webber International University women's basketball faced off against St. Thomas, Friday, in a Sun Conference semifinal match up. The Warriors and Bobcats engaued in a hard fought match up, but a great fourth quarter lifted Webber International to victory, 54-45.

Deslyn Applewhaite led the Warriors with 16 points on the night and added six rebounds. Jurnee Pettigrew posted a solid game, netting 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Quanthavia Stalworth nearly missed a double-double, after going for 9 points and 13 rebounds.

The Warriors full-court press was successful early in the game with Applewhaite registering steals on the Bobcats first two possessions, putting Webber International ahead, 8-3.  After both teams had settled in, the Warriors continued to shot well, pushing its advantage to 13-5. After the first 10 minutes of action, the Warriors held a narrow, 15-10, advantage.

The second quarter saw strong defense from both sides, with neither team shooting well from the field. St. Thomas was able to claw back into the game, but the Warriors would go into half time up, 25-20.

The offense picked up I the third quarter, seeing 32 total points. The Warriors bigs dominated the quarter, with Mcrae and Pettigrew combining for nine of Webber International's 16 points. The teams would trade baskets throughout the period, with Webber International holding on to a 41-37 advantage.

The game was neck-and-neck in the fourth with both teams pushing hard for the victory. St. Thomas fought hard early on, but the Warriors were able to impose their will on the Bobcats by crashing the paint and winning on the offensive boards. After the final whistle had blown, the Warriors were victorious, 54-45.

The Warriors advance to the Sun Conference Championship game against top-seeded Southeastern, Saturday, February 27 at 7 p.m.
