Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. – Webber International welcomed Johnson & Wales, Wednesday, in a Sun Conference clash. The Warriors took control of the game early on, but had to fight off a late comeback to secure the, 81-71, win.
The Warriors' starting five posted double-digit points, led by Jessica Colson's 20. Colson was hot from behind the beyond the arch, going 4-9. Quanthavia Stalworth was strong from the free throw line, going 8-10, finishing the game with 14 points and nine rebounds. Deslyn Applewhaite chipped in 12 points, with Mar'Lisa Braxton and Jermisha Mcrae adding 11 points each.
The first quarter saw the Warriors defense set the tone for the game, limiting Johnson & Wales to just seven points. The Wildcats scored their first basket after two minutes of play. Johnson & Wales' next field goal would come with 33 seconds left in the quarter. In between those two baskets, the Warriors scored nine unanswered points, taking a 12-7 lead into the second quarter.
Webber International's offense stepped up in the second quarter, posting a game-high 24 points. The Warriors opened the second quarter with a 14-2 run, led by eight points from Colson. The Warriors would hold a double-digit lead the rest of the quarter, going into half time up, 36-24.
The third quarter was tightly contested, with the Warriors outscoring the Wildcats by only two points. Webber International's offense came out of halftime hot, pushing it advantage as high as 20 points early on in the third quarter. Johnson & Wales played well in the third, but the Warriors matched the Wildcats basket-for-basket maintaining its double-digit lead heading into the final period, 58-44.
After going up by as much as 19 points in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats gradually chipped away at the massive deficit. Johnson & Wales was able to cut the Warrior advantage to single-digits with four minute left in the game, for the first time since the 9:26 mark in the third quarter. Better defense and stellar free throw shooting from Webber International kept the Wildcats at bay, giving Webber International the, 81-71, victory.
