BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Webber International University Lady Warriors basketball team hosted conference opponent and Crooked Lake rival, Warner University Lady Royals this evening at 5 p.m. in the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The Lady Warriors won the game, 50-46.
The long awaited matchup began with a two-point shot by the Lady Warriors. The teams quickly tied 2-2, and in subsequent minutes, the Lady Warriors struggled to gain and maintain the lead, lagging just behind the Lady Royals for the majority of the first half. With 4:10 left in the first half, things began to heat up as the Lady Warriors took the lead, 19-17 with a 3-point shot by
Jurnee Pettigrew. With 3:22 left in play, the teams tied, 19-19. The Lady Warriors' defense almost let things slip out of their hands, but tied again at 1:23, with a score of 22-22. The Lady Warriors went into the locker room on top, 24-22.
Into the second half, the determination to win was evident on the court as both teams went neck to neck the entire game. The teams tied up several times, refusing to surrender a win. With 43 seconds left in play, the Lady Warriors were up 47-46. The Lady Warriors stayed on top the remainder of the game and took the win, 50-46.
Leading the Lady Warriors on the court were:
Shakeria Wilson with 12 points, 1 assist, 5 steals, and 2 rebounds;
Amber Ferguson with 3 points, 2 blocks, 1 steal, and 2 rebounds;
Deslyn Applewhaite, with 12 points, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 8 rebounds; and
Jurnee Pettigrew, with 9 points, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 4 rebounds.
Webber's record 18-4 overall and 11-3 in The Sun Conference.
The Lady Warriors will return to action on February 12
th at home as they host Johnson & Wales University Lady Wildcats at 7 p.m.
