Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. - Webber International University women's basketball opened Sun Conference play, Wednesday night, on the road against (RV) Southeastern. The Warriors were in control of the game from the tip off, but a great second half gave Webber International the dominant, 86-58, victory over the Fire.
The Warriors boasted five players that notched double-digit points on the night. Deslyn Applewhaite and Mar'Lisa Braxton led the way with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Applewhaite had an overall good game, adding three assists and a team-high eight rebounds
The ranked Fire came out strong holding the lead through most of the first quarter. The Warriors were able to keep the game close, eventually taking their first lead with three minutes left in the quarter. Shakeria Wilson sank a three-pointer with five seconds left to give Webber International a 20-16 lead after the first ten minutes.
Webber International kept the momentum going, starting the second quarter with an 8-0 run. The Warriors would go on to dominate the quarter, leading wire-to-wire, seeing its lead never dip below eight points. At half time Webber International had built a comfortable, 42-26, advantage.
The Warriors defense was the star of the third quarter, limiting Southeastern to just nine points. The smothering defense forced four turnovers and held the Fire to 25% shooting from the field. Heading into the final quarter, the Warriors' advantage had ballooned to 59-35.
With a 24-point lead in hand Webber International did not slow down, scoring a game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter. Midway through the final frame, Webber International had built its largest lead of the game at 72-41. The Fire played well on offense to close out the game but it was not enough to make a significant dent in the Webber International lead. The Warriors would go on to an 86-58 victory.
