Women’s Basketball Storms Past North Florida, 72-60

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Webber International University was on the road, Thursday, for a midweek showdown with, NCAA D-I opponent, North Florida on ESPN 3.

The Warriors' full-court press disoriented North Florida allowing Webber International to control the game, relinquishing the lead only once.  

On offense, four Warrior players surpassed the double-digit point mark. Jurnee Pettigrew led the way with 14 points. Quanthavia Stalworth and Victoria Baggett added 12 points, while Mar'Lisa Braxton netted 11. Pettigrew dominated the boards, hauling in eight rebounds. Braxton was the facilitator on the day, dishing out five assists. Stalworth was a defensive force, swatting six Osprey shots.

The game started slow, with only 16 total points scored. The Warriors opened the game with a 5-0 run but North Florida responded with a 5-0 run of its own. Layups from Stalworth and Pettigrew closed out the first quarter, putting Webber International up, 9-7.

The Warriors came alive in the second quarter scoring 24 points.

The Ospreys opened the second quarter strong, taking its first lead at 19-16. Facing its first deficit, Webber International's full court pressure began to pay dividends, as North Florida committed five consecutive turnovers. The Warriors capitalized on its strong defensive play, scoring off all five turnovers to go on a 13-0 run and jump ahead, 29-19.

After 20 minutes, Webber International led North Florida, 33-26.

The Warrior blitz continued in the second half, forcing North Florida into 12 more turnovers.

North Florida came out fast in the third quarter, cutting the Warrior lead to 36-30. A Pettigrew three then set off a sequence that saw three more shots from behind the arch fall, with Webber maintaining the lead. With two minutes left in the third, The Warriors scored six unanswered points to push their advantage to 55-40 heading in to the final quarter.

The Ospreys continued its trend of fast starts, hitting two three-pointers to open the fourth quarter. Webber International and North Florida battled back-and-fourth, with the Ospreys' cutting the Warrior lead to nine with a minute left to play. The Warriors iced the game from the free-throw line, going 6-6 to secure the 72-60 victory.
