Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. – Webber International University women's basketball hosted, NAIA Division 1 opponent, Xavier University of Louisiana, Saturday night. The Warriors gave the Gold Nuggets everything they could handle but fell short of a victory, 47-42.
Jurnee Pettigrew and Deslyn Applewhaite lead the team with eight points each, while Pettigrew pulled down eight rebounds. Mar'Lisa Braxton was a great facilitator, dishing out seven assists on the night.
The Warriors came out fast in the first quarter taking a 6-2 lead. With a minute left, Webber International found itself tied at 11-11. As time expired Xavier was able to sneak in a layup, taking a 13-11 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter was just as tightly contested. The Warriors trailed the Gold Nuggets for 10 minute, but kept the deficit under 10. At half time, Webber International trailed, 30-23.
Defense was on tap in the third quarter, with only 13 total points scored. Pettigrew scored all four of the Warriors points in the quarter, cutting the Xavier lead to 39-27 heading into the final quarter.
Webber International mounted a valiant comeback in the fourth quarter. It looked as if Xavier was going to run away with the game, building a 44-28 lead early on. Back-to-back Victoria Baggett three-pointers sparked the Warriors final push. The Warriors then went on a, 6-0, run dropping the Xavier lead to 46-40. Unfortunately, time ran out on Webber International, eventually losing out, 47-42.
The Warriors are back in action, Saturday, November 7 at 7 p.m., when they host Madonna University.
