Warriors Split with Night Hawks, 1-1

Thomasville, Ga. - The Webber International University Lady Warriors (8-7, 5-2) outlasted the TU Lady Night Hawks (7-12, 3-5), 75-70, in an exciting Sun Conference battle on Saturday afternoon at the TU Gymnasium. Then the Webber International University Warriors (7-13, 3-6) lost to the TU Night Hawks (12-7, 5-4), 88-68.
 
Webber opened up an 8-0 lead to open the game holding the Lady Night Hawks scoreless for the opening three minutes. TU finally got on the board with two free throws at the 16:38 mark but WIU remained hot from three point range knocking down their fourth three of the early going for a 14-2 advantage with 15:50 to go in the half. A 5-2 run for Thomas made it a 7 point game with ten to play. The Warriors responded with a run of their own to open up a ten point lead with six minutes to play. TU responded again with a 5-0 run to make it a 24-19 game but Webber came right back with four of their own. Webber took a 32-27 advantage into the locker room in a half that featured sloppy play from besides, with the teams combining for 33 turnovers of which the Lady Night Hawks had 20.
 
TU opened the second with three unanswered points to close the gap to two but a failed free throw and a turnover led to Webber's first points of the half. A 13-2 run by WIU put them ahead 48-43 with eleven minutes to go in the half. The teams exchanged baskets and turnovers over the next three minutes until Webber made it a nine point game when they converted on a rebound after two missed free throws, taking a 61-52 lead with 5:44 to play. A 9-4 run by TU was capped with a basket by freshman guard Joi Wright, converting her free throw after being fouled to make it a 65-61 game with 1:27 to play. Webber outscored TU 10-9 down the stretch to close out the five point victory.
 
The Warriors would then take on the Night Hawks men's basketball team after a short break. The hot hand of junior guard Max Grace led TU (12-7, 5-4) to a 88-68 route of Webber International University (7-13, 3-6) on Saturday evening at the TU Gymnasium. Their fourth Sun Conference victory in a row.
 
Grace started the game 5-5 from behind the arc and in the first 10 minutes scored 17 of the Night Hawks 24 points. Thomas outscored the Warriors 24-11 in the first 10 minutes. The second ten minutes of the half Webber outscored the Night Hawks 16-13 to make it an eight point game at the half.
 
Thomas had the ball coming out to start the second half and opened the half with a huge alley-oop pass from freshman guard Trey Gosier to the high flying hands of senior Justyn Watkins for the slam, bringing the home crowd to their feet with a wild ovation. WIU would battle back to bring the game to within 5 with 14:20 left on the clock, but TU just kept making big defensive plays and went on an 11-0 run at the 10 minute mark of the second half to put the Night Hawks up by 22, 68-46. Thomas controlled the scoreboard the rest of the way to get them one game above .500 in TSC play.
 
The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, January 29th as they host Crooked Lake Rivals Warner University Royals starting at 5:00 p.m. for the ladies and 7:00 p.m. for the men's game.
