WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - They say beating a team three times in one season is one of the toughest jobs in college sports. This came to haunt the Warriors after they fell short in their National Tournament bid.
The Warriors (13-14) swept Edward Waters (9-14) in the regular season but fell by a score of 59-54 on Saturday evening in the FSC Championship game. By virtue of the win the Tigers will represent Region XIV in the National Championships to be held in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Warriors' can hold their heads high, especially coach Ben Braaten who is in his first year with the women's basketball program.
The game started, as most championship games do, very tightly with the two teams missing a total of 13 buckets between them. This seemed to be the theme for the Warriors who were obviously feeling the effects of three games in three days, shooting only 17.1% from the floor. Edward Waters did not fair too much better with a 27.8 shooting percentage. The teams went into the break with the Tigers holding a 29-19 edge.
The break seemed to reinvigorate Edward Waters who soon jumped out to a commanding 43-27 lead. The Warriors responded in style cutting the lead to single digits with a 10-2 run of their own. The All-Tournament players for the Warriors dragged the team within four, both #Jardae Robinson# and #Ashley Gabbert# and both finished with double-doubles in the game.
The two teams exchanged blows towards the end of the game however the late Warrior charge was too little and too late. The team should be proud of their achievements as they carried the torch for Warrior basketball this season.
