BABSON PARK, Fla. — The Webber International University women's volleyball team battled back after dropping the opening set to defeat Warner University, 3-1, Wednesday night at Jessica Costanzo Court inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
The Warriors fell in a tightly contested opening set, 27-25, before responding with three consecutive set victories to secure the match. Webber claimed the second set, 25-23, before taking control in the third and fourth sets, winning 25-16 and 25-12, respectively.
With the victory, Webber improves to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in Sun Conference play, while Warner falls to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Webber's offense was led by Cristina Marrero, who recorded a team-high 14 kills while adding three service aces for 17 total points. Yaleesmar Rivera Rosa and Ninette Romero Lopez each contributed 13 kills, with Romero Lopez hitting .370 for the match and adding two blocks.
At the net, Romero Lopez and Stacy Maimur each recorded two blocks, while Brianna Adams added a block of her own.
Lucianna Marinella helped orchestrate the Warriors' attack with 31 assists while also recording 14 digs. Alejandra Aponte anchored the defensive effort with a match-high 22 digs and added 10 assists. Kalyn Morgan finished with 12 digs and led Webber with four service aces.
As a team, Webber finished the match with 51 kills, 49 assists, eight service aces and 65 digs. The Warriors also held Warner to a .057 hitting percentage while hitting .213 collectively.
After Warner took the opening set, Webber responded in the second, overcoming a late push from the Royals to even the match at one set apiece. The Warriors then carried that momentum into the third set, building an early advantage before closing out the frame, 25-16.
Webber continued to control the match in the fourth set, limiting Warner to 12 points and hitting .312 as a team to close out the four-set victory.
The Warriors return to action Saturday, Sept. 12, when they host Keiser University at 2 p.m. at Jessica Costanzo Court inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
