West Point, GA – The 9th ranked Webber International Men's Lacrosse team survived a furious fourth-quarter rally from Point and came away with a 13-12 overtime victory on Saturday afternoon at River Bowl Stadium in West Point, Georgia.
Webber controlled much of the contest early, scoring three times in the opening quarter behind a hat trick from Nick Sheaffer to take a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes. The Warriors kept the pressure on in the second, getting goals from Sheaffer, Ethan Baker, Jeremiah Loo, and Sheaffer again to build a 7-3 halftime advantage.
The Warriors added to their lead in the third when Loo found the back of the net at the 7:18 mark, pushing the margin to 8-3. Point answered later in the quarter, but Webber still carried a 8-4 lead into the final period.
Webber appeared to put the game in hand early in the fourth. Baker scored off an assist from Sam Shields, Benjamin Sheldon added another off a feed from Baker, and Sheaffer completed his sixth goal of the game on another Baker assist to stretch the Warriors' lead to 11-4 with 11:48 remaining.
Point refused to go away, however, erupting for eight goals in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 12-12 with just 18 seconds left in regulation. Webber's only answer during the run came from Joseph Xiarhos with 2:32 to play, setting the stage for overtime after the Skyhawks completed the comeback push.
In overtime, the Warriors delivered the final blow. Sam Shields scored the game-winner with 3:22 remaining in the extra session off an assist from Israel Miranda to secure the 13-12 win.
Sheaffer led Webber offensively with six goals and one assist, while Baker added two goals and two assists and Loo posted two goals and one assist. Shields finished with a goal and an assist, Miranda won 21 faceoffs and collected 15 ground balls, and Liam Murphy made 10 saves in goal for the Warriors. Webber also held the edge in faceoffs, 21-8, and ground balls, 38-21.
Point was paced by Malyke Sillers with five goals, while Shaun McLaughlin added three goals and two assists. Rodney Oakley scored twice for the Skyhawks in the loss.
