Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Warriors men's volleyball team came back home from their month-long road trip to their second matchup of the season with the St. Andrew University Knights. The Warriors took down the Knights in four sets on the road in their first matchup, but in the comfort of their own gym, the Warriors took care of business with a three-set sweep of the Knights for their 10
th win of the season.
The Warriors, excited to play at home after their month-long road trip, brought toughness and grit in the first set of the match, which ended up being the closest score out of all three sets. Two kills from
Carson Barnes and
Kevin McCarthy got the Warriors rolling early as the score remained close.
Ayden Keeter who is usually
assisting other Warriors on kills, got one for himself to even the score back up at 5-5. The Knights would lead by as much as four points before the Warriors answered back with a 3-0 run with a kill from Gunter Perea,
Thoralf Schmelzer and a service ace from Keeter. The Knights would call timeout and following a 3-0 run by the Knights, the Warriors would reclaim the lead with a 6-0 run and they would not surrender it as Schmelzer would help claim match point with another kill to lead the Warriors to a 25-23 set one victory. Set two was not nearly as close of an affair with the Warriors jumping out to an early 4-0 lead with three errors from the Knights and a Barnes kill. The Warriors would take set two wire to wire with a multitude of Warriors racking up kills with McCarthy and Schmelzer adding three each to their match total. The Warriors dominated throughout set two to a 25-15 set two win to lead the match 2-0.
The Warriors would once again jump out to a hot start in the third set of the match leading 4-1 with a kill from Perea. Perea would add three early kills and an ace in the set to get his team rolling leading the Knights 10-6. Barnes would tally an ace for himself, followed by a Schmelzer kill moving the score further apart at 16-11 and forcing a Knights timeout. Schmelzer would lead the way for the Warriors on the day with 10 kills, and closely behind him was Barnes with eight, and McCarthy with seven. The Knights would attempt a late comeback to force a fourth set, but the Warriors potent offensive attack proved to be too great a hurdle for the Knights as the Warriors closed out set three 25-20 to win the match 3-0.
The Warriors have a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon Friday, March 29
th as they continue their home stand with a matchup with Bluefield University at 1:00 PM and Kentucky State University at 5:00 PM.
