Warriors Submerge Mariners in OT Win on the Road

Brunswick, GA – The Webber International Women's Basketball team traveled to Brunswick Georgia Wednesday evening to take on the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners. In a game that needed an extra frame, the Warriors came out victorious, 89-86 in overtime.

After the Warriors won the opening tip, Jermaisa Klopsis scored first off an assist from Jaiden Ross. Ross made the next basket off of the feed from Samantha Pacheco. Klopsis scored the next four points before Janaina Goncalves hit her first basket of the night, making it 10-7 in favor of Webber. Ross and Pacheco scored the next sic for the Warriors before Alisha Walker hit a layup. A free throw by Coastal Georgia would put the Mariners up three going into the second quarter, 21-18.

Pacheco tied it herself in the second quarter, turning a steal from Goncalves into two points, then going 1-2 from the line. Ross and Kaliyah Little hit the next two in the back-and-forth affair, with Little's layup making it 25-25.  Ross and Klopsis scored the next three points before Jasmine Henry got on the board with a jump shot. Little hit a three to retake the Warrior lead, before another free throw from Pacheco put the Warriors ahead again at the half, 34-33.

Scoring came in bunches for the Warriors in the third quarter, Goncalves and Klopsis scored the first seven for Webber with Goncalves hitting a three-pointer. Pacheco hit a jumper off the assist from Goncalves. Little hit two free throws and then knocked down a three. Another three from Goncalves gave Webber a 13-point lead, 51-38. The Mariners were able to retake the lead, but another three from Little and a layup from Ross put the game tied at 56. A free throw from the Mariners gave them a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Walker started the fourth quarter with five straight points. Klopsis hit a jumper off an assist from Goncalves. Pacheco, Goncalves, and Little scored the next seven for the Warriors, giving Webber a four-point lead, 70-66. Pacheco, Klopsis, Ross, and Goncalves would score seven for the Warriors, giving them a two-point lead with eight seconds on the clock. A last-second layup by the Mariners sent the game to overtime tied at 77.

Overtime would prove to be just as tight as the first four quarters. Pacheco scored the first six for the Warriors, on two shots and two free throws, giving Webber an 83-79 lead. Walker and Goncalves each made two from the Charity stripe to keep Webber ahead by five, 87-82. The Mariners got within three, but a free throw each from Klopsis and Pacheco iced the game with Webber leaving Brunswick with a three-point victory, 89-86.

Pacheco led the Warriors with 22 points to go along with eight assists and five rebounds. Goncalves had 16 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Little had 15, three, and three, while Klopsis and Ross scored 13 and 12 respectively.

The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, February 10th when they host the Southeastern Fire for a blackout in the Sabbagh Center.
