Burgess' Milestone Night Leads Warriors over Gyrenes

Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Women's Basketball team hosted the Ave Maria Gyrenes Wednesday night in the Sabbagh Center. On a night when Junior Guard Jaida Burgess eclipsed 1,000 career points, the Warriors took care of the Gyrenes 76-65.

Jaiden Ross scored the first points of the game, on a layup off an assist from Kaliyah Little. Burgess scored her first of 28 points soon after. Burgess and Ross scored again to keep Webber within two, 10-8. Ross scored another layup before Jermaisa Klopsis tied it at 12. Burgess' third bucket of the night kept it tied, and her fourth basket, another layup, was the milestone. Klopsis scored two more times and Samantha Pacheco hit a free throw as the Warriors and Gyrenes headed into the second quarter tied at 21.

Ave Maria jumped out to a thirteen-point lead before the Warriors were able to get on the board, a free throw from Burgess. Burgess made another free throw and Little sank her first shot of the night. Pacheco and Klopsis scored the next five, on two free throws and a three-pointer. Triniti Lee hit two free throws and Ross made one more jumper as Webber headed into halftime down 41-34.

Pacheco and Little scored the first six in the third quarter for Webber, with Pacheco's two free throws sinking the deficit to 43-40. Burgess scored six straight for Webber before a Pacheco-assisted jump shot from Ross. Another Burgess basket put Webber down by one, and another make from Ross gave them the lead. Burgess hit a three right before the end of the quarter to give the Warriors a 55-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Warriors started the final frame with a made basket from Pacheco. Burgess scored the next four before a three-pointer from Little made it 64-55 Webber. Pacheco had a layup off an assist from Burgess, and Burgess responded by making a shot and getting fouled, sinking the and one opportunity from the charity stripe. Little made two more free throws to end her night. Pacheco ended the scoring for the Warriors with five straight free throws made, as Webber took down the Gyrenes 76-65.

Burgess led the Warriors with a double-double. She had 28 points as well as 11 rebounds, all defensive. Pacheco had 16 points to go along with 6 assists and four steals. Jaiden Ross was the third Warrior in double digits, as she had 12 points and three rebounds.

The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, February 24th when they host the St. Thomas Bobcats for Senior Night in the Sabbagh Center.
