Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Men's Basketball team welcomed the Ave Maria Gyrenes to Jessica Costanzo Court for an early season SUN Conference matchup Saturday evening. The Warriors were down big early and were unable to dig themselves out of the hole as they fell 89-76.
Jordan Golden got the party started for the Warriors, hitting his first shot of the night. After a steal, Khalyl Simmons took the ball to the rack for his first points of the game before Golden again made a shot. Webber proceeded to go on a seven-minute scoreless streak as Ave Maria built a sizable lead. Ethan Taylor broke the streak with a layup, cutting the score to 25-8. Golden scored again before Jovon Rosse and Simmons hit back-to-back threes. Golden, Jerry Carraway Jr., and Jaquris Slaughter all scored for Webber. Simmons hit another three before Zachary O'Callaghan made a layup to score the final points of the half, as Webber remained down 51-27 heading into the break.
Orlando Thomas and Carraway Jr., scored first for the Warriors in the second half. Simmons found paydirt again before another layup from Thomas. Carraway Jr., scored the next four for the Warriors, then assisted Golden on another basket. Golden was fouled on his way to the basket, sinking the and-one. Thomas was also fouled on his next make, sinking his free throw as well. After a deadball, Taylor unloaded down the court to O'Callaghan, who hammered the ball down for a dunk. Carraway Jr., O'Callaghan, and Gabriel Sorensen each had a layup before Thomas was fouled again and sent to the charity stripe, where he sunk two. Thomas then had a fastbreak layup followed by two free throws from O'Callaghan. Thomas again made a layup with Simmons making another three after. Jaylin Bain hit a three, Carraway Jr., got a steal and score, and Golden hit one more shot. Montreal McCullough scored the final five points of the game for Webber with two baskets and a free throw, as Webber fell to Ave Maria 89-76.
Golden, Simmons, and Thomas each had 13 points. Golden added 11 rebounds and three steals, while Simmons and Thomas each had three rebounds. Carraway Jr., had 12 points to go along with five assists and five rebounds.
The Warriors will be back in action on Wednesday, November 20th when they travel to Miami Gardens to take on the St. Thomas Bobcats in another SUN Conference game.
