Warriors Lose Heartbreaker to Mighty Banyans

Babson Park, FL – The Webber International University Women's Soccer team battled new SUN Conference opponent, the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans on Thursday afternoon. The Warriors had 12 days off in between matches due to weather cancelations and they were looking to head their second half of the season in the right direction starting with their match against the Banyans. The Warriors would start off the match playing well in the first half and jump out to an early lead, but two late counter attacking goals from the Banyans would prove to be decisive and hand the Warriors their third straight loss 2-1.

The Warriors jumped out to a fantastic start playing well all the way through their formation, connecting passes and creating opportunities as the early part of the match progressed. They would create four offensive opportunities in the first 10 minutes and the fourth would be the one to notch the match's opening goal. Yerika Pereira found her herself pressing the backline of the Banyans and took care of business, stealing the ball off the center back and finishing the first goal of the game to give the Warriors the 1-0 advantage. The Warriors continued to play well throughout the first half, getting multiple chances at goal with 13 shots at goal in the first half alone. Juliana Grider also continued her impressive freshman campaign with six saves on the day, keeping the Warriors lead at 1-0 at halftime.

The second half of play began with a slight momentum shift in the Banyans favor. The Warriors continued getting shots off at net with 15 more shots in the second half, 28 total for the game, but would be unable to find the back of the net again. Sofia Hernandez Cruz would end of being the player of the match for the Banyans netting both goals, the equalizer in the 79th minute off an over the top through ball, and the game winning goal in the 86th minute off a rebound shot that would be the finishing touches on a come from behind win for the Banyans in Babson Park 2-1.

The Warriors will face the SCAD-Savannah Bees, for the second time this season, at home on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM.
