Louisville, KY. - The Webber International Men's and Women's bowling team finished their Mid-South Conference Tournament trip on Sunday evening. The Warriors men's and women's teams competed in the Lynne Jordan Memorial on Saturday evening, with both squads earning a third-place finish and then they went on to play in the Thomas Burris Memorial tournament on Sunday with the women's team earning another top ten finish and the men's team would earn a first-place finish to top off an excellent weekend to the Warriors road trip up north.
The Warrior women were led by senior leaders
Jacqueline Witura and
Linda Himes who both earned top five finishes individually to lead the Warriors team to a third-place finish. Witura, finishing first overall, had a game four high of 258 and 220 average throughout the tournament to earn all-tournament honors once again for her Warrior squad. Himes, also earning all-tournament team honors, finished third overall individually with a game two high of 255 and a 219 average through tournament play. Himes and Witura's strong play in the middle games helped the Warriors pick up ground in the standings, dropping 1,132 pins as a team in game three and 1,108 pins in game four. The Warriors would go into the baker games, in first place with a 34-pin lead over second place Pikeville, but after 12 baker games, they would eventually finish in third place overall to wrap up their Saturday tournament.
The Warrior men's squad had a slower start to their Saturday tournament play, but a strong finish once the team got into the baker games in the second half of the day. The Warriors would have their best game as a team in game one with 1,142 pins total, but they would go into the baker games firmly in third place following same great late game play from
AJ Wolstenholme with a game two high of 257 to help secure the Warriors position in the top five going into baker play. The Warriors would dominate the 12 baker games, totaling 2,613 pins as team to finish with 7,936 pins overall for the day. They would finish just shy of 100 pins behind second place Pikeville to earn their fifth top five finish of the season.
The men's team would roll into Sunday, looking for a stronger start in the Thomas Burris Memorial and they would be led by senior bowler,
Charles Bostic who earned a top 15 finish overall. He would help lead the Warriors to a strong second place finish through individual team play with a game one high of 234 and a 213 average on the day. Sophomore bowler,
Brandon Bohn would also bring some great late game help to the Warriors side with a game five high of 279, to help bolster their position going into the baker games. The Warriors would get off to a hot start in the game games with a 222 game one, and a 249 game two to help increase their lead. They would go on to add another 249 in game four and 259 in game six to help extend their first place lead in Sunday' competition. After 12 baker games, the Warriors would finish the Thomas Burris Memorial, firmly in first place with a 7,879 overall pin total, which was 322 pins ahead of second place Tennessee Wesleyan.
The Warrior women would once again get off to another fast start in Sunday's tournament, bolstering three bowlers in the top five individually. Maria Gonzalez would finish first overall for the Warriors with a game five high of 225 and a 205 average pin total per game on the day. Himes and Witura, following an impressive day on Saturday, would follow closely behind their teammate with Himes in third and Witura just behind her in fourth place overall. Himes had a game two high of 236 that helped climb the Warriors in the standings early on, and Witura throw on a game five high of 234, pushing the Warriors into the baker games firmly in the second place position. The baker games would prove to be the more difficult of the two games for the Warriors on the day as they started out well with a 205 game one and 188 game two, but they would falter late down the stretch and fall out of the top five for just their second time this year placing out of the top five with a sixth place finish to wrap up their tournament weekend.
The Warriors will jump back into play in the NAIA Southwest Open on February 3
