Babson Park, FL – In the first edition of the 2024 Crooked Lake Clash, the Webber International Women's Basketball team hosted their rivals in the Warner Royals Wednesday night. After a back-and-forth first half, the Warriors outpaced and outscored their opponents 45-19 in the second half, cruising to an 84-54 victory.
Janaina Goncalves was the first Warrior on the board, getting a jumper off an assist from
Jaida Burgess. Goncalves returned the favor to Burgess soon after.
Samantha Pacheco and
Jaiden Ross scored the next six for the Warriors, with Pacheco making a basket, and Ross making two free throws then a basket. Burgess,
Alisha Walker, and
Jermasia Klopsis took turns scoring it next for the Warriors. Webber took a 21-14 lead into the second quarter.
Triniti Lee started the second quarter with a three-point make. Pacheco made a three of her own before another basket for a five-point run to put the score at 29-23 Webber. Burgess sank one of two from the line and then hit a three of her own. Walker made another layup before Burgess ended the half with four points, giving Webber a 39-35 lead.
Pacheco hit a quick three out of the half, as the Warrior offense started to hum. She hit another jump shot before Klopsis connected from deep off the feed from Goncalves. Burgess scored the next six for the Warriors, before
Kaliyah Little, in her first game action this season, scored a basket. Burgess and Little scored the next four to give Webber a 59-48 lead. The final five points of the quarter went Klopsis from the line, Burgess made a basket and Klopsis made a basket to head to the final frame with Webber holding onto a 13-point lead, 64-51.
The Warrior defense held stout in the fourth quarter, limiting the Royals to three total points. Goncalves started the scoring for the Warriors with a bucket off an assist from Pacheco.
Kori Wimberly scored both a two-pointer and a three-pointer, to extend the lead to 20, 71-51. Goncalves hit a three before the Royals got on the board with one free throw, ending the 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter. Klopsis hit another bucket before
Jasmine Henry got her first two points of the night. Klopsis hit another shot, putting the Warrior lead at 28, 80-52.
Nellie Jackson and
Zeri Tyler scored the final four for the Warriors as they cruised to a 30-point victory 84-54.
Burgess again led the team in scoring, dropping 23 points while going 8-10 from the charity stripe. She also co-led the team with eight boards. Pacheco had 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and four steals. Off the bench, Klopsis also had 12 points, while grabbing five boards and dishing three assists off the bench.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, January 20
th when they host the Florida Memorial Lions in the Sabbagh Center at 2 PM.
