Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Women's Basketball team hosted the Florida Memorial Lions on Saturday afternoon for more SUN Conference action. After a defensively-minded game, the Warriors prevailed over the Lions 58-53.
Jaida Burgess scored on a layup toward the beginning of the quarter to tie the game at 2-2. Both teams went back and forth missing shots. The Lions were able to build an 11-point lead before
Alisha Walker scored again for the Warriors making it 13-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Walker made the first basket of the second quarter off an assist from
Kaliyah Little. Walker scored again in the paint before
Triniti Lee got up and down for a fast-break layup, making the score 16-9. Little scored the next five points for the Warriors, making two free throws, before draining a three-pointer to drop the deficit to five points, 19-14.
Samantha Pacheco made a basket and Jermaisia Klopsis hit a free throw to head into the half with the score 20-17 in favor of Florida Memorial.
Klopsis and Burgess both hit shots leading out of the half, with Pacheco assisting Klopsis and Klopsis assisting Burgess, to take the lead 21-20. Burgess retook the lead with an assist from Pacheco and the Warriors held onto the lead for the rest of the game.
Jaiden Ross got her name in the stat sheet, hitting both shots off assists from Pacheco to bring the score to 27-22 in favor of Webber. Klopsis turned defense into offense, getting a steal and then scoring a layup. Burgess scored the next seven points for the Warriors, hitting two jumpers and three free throws.
Kori Wimberly found the bottom of the net before Walker scored the final four points for the Warriors in the third, putting the score at 42-30.
Burgess and Lee scored first in the fourth, hitting a jumper and two free throws respectively.
Janaina Goncalves scored a basket off an offensive rebound, before Burgess did the same, making the score 50-35. Goncalves made another basket off an assist from Burgess. Little assisted Burgess next before Burgess and Little traded off the final four points for the Warriors. Despite a late surge from the Lions, Webber held on 58-53.
Burgess led the team in points and rebounds, netting a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Walker was the next leading scorer, with nine points and three rebounds. Little had seven off the bench, while Klopsis had five.
The Warriors will be back in action on Wednesday, January 24
th when they travel to Ave Maria, Florida to take on the Ave Maria Gyrenes at 5:30 PM.
