Box Score 2 Cleveland, Ga. – The Webber International Women's Volleyball team competed in their first two games at the Truett McConnell Invite in Cleveland, Georgia. The Warriors beat the St. Andrews Knights early Friday afternoon and lost to the University of the Cumberlands Patriots Friday night.
The first set against St. Andrews was dominated by the Warriors. Webber quickly jumped out to a 6-2 lead, highlighted by two service aces by Libero Bailey Berger. Kills from Delanie Johnson and Cintia Lorena kept the Warriors lead at 9-5, and four points would be the closest the Knights were able to get to the Warriors in set 1. Kills by Savannah Wilhite, Jaizah Anderson, and Rylee Bolser helped keep the Warriors ahead in the set, leading by 7 at 19-12. Webber ended set 1 on a 6-2 run, with Nadia Reid and Ana Clara Araujo picking up kills to help Webber win set 1 25-14.
In set 2, the Warriors led the Knights early, having a commanding 8-3 lead. Araujo served six straight points for the Warriors with one being a service ace. Webber kept the Knights at bay, keeping a five to six-point lead for the next few points before unforced errors kept the door open. Head Coach Justin Dee took a timeout with the Warrior lead down to two points 14-12. Reid was able to extend the Warriors' lead back to three, making the score 18-15 after a kill and a service ace. Webber and St. Andrews split the next six points, with a Paysee Crow service ace keeping the Warriors ahead 21-18, forcing a timeout from the Knights. Out of the timeout, the Warriors scored another before allowing four straight points and making the set tied at 22. Webber would get to set point following a St. Andrews service error and a kill by Wilhite, but four straight points from the Knights gave them set 2 and tied the match at 1.
The Warriors came out on fire in the third set, outscoring the Knights 14-3 with a whole host of Warriors getting in on the scoring. Kills from Wilhite, Reid, Bolser, Anderson, and Cintia Lorena allowed the team to jump out to the 11-point lead. St. Andrews scored seven of the next 11 points, putting the Knights down eight with the score 18-10. Those wound up being the last points that St. Andrews scored as the Warriors took advantage of four St. Andrews attacking errors, with kills from Reid and Kiersten Tisdale as well, to give the Warriors the set 3 victory 25-10.
Set 4 started with the Warriors taking the first point before the Knights rattled off six straight points. Coach Dee took a timeout with the score 6-1 to try and stop the momentum. The Knights were able to keep the Warriors at arm's length, however, as kills from Wilhite, Reid, and Araujo would routinely be counteracted by the Knights. The Warriors dropped the deficit to four after a block from Lorena and Wilhite, to bring the score to 13-9. This would wind up being the closest the Warriors got to the Knights in set 4. St. Andrews was able to take advantage of Warrior errors and outscored Webber 12-9 in the rest of the set winning set 4 25-20, forcing a set 5.
Set 5 was a back-and-forth affair the entire set. Webber scored the first three points of set 5 before the Knights responded with three of their own. The Knights scored three of the next four points to take a 6-4 lead over the Warriors. A kill from Johnson and a St. Andrews attacking error tied the game at 6 before Webber and St. Andrews would go back and forth with each team only being able to take a one-point lead before the other tied it back up. This back-and-forth put the game tied at 13 following a kill from Reid. Bolser gave the Warriors a one-point lead after another kill before a St. Andrews error gave the Warriors the set-and-match win.
Reid and Wilhite led the Warriors in kills with 16 and 13 kills respectively. Araujo and Crow led the Warriors with 27 and 20 assists during the match. Bolser and Lorena each had 4 blocks while Berger added in 3 service aces.
The Warriors and the University of the Cumberlands Patriots started out set 1 in a back and forth battle, kills by Anderson, Lorena, Wilhite, and Reid had both teams knotted up at 5. Both teams traded points with the Warriors holding on to a two-point lead thanks to a block by Bolser and Lorena, and an attacking error by the Patriots. Webber scored two of the next three points thanks in part to more block from Lorena and Bolser, forcing the Patriots to use a timeout. After the timeout, the Warriors seemingly had an answer for every Patriot point. Almost every point scored by the University of the Cumberlands was immediately responded to by the Warriors. Kills by Anderson, Johnson, and Reid had the Warriors up 19-14 forcing the Patriots into their second timeout. Coming out of the timeout, an attacking error and a service ace from Berger had the Warriors up seven 21-14. Webber capitalized on three Patriots errors to take four of the next seven points and they won set 1 25-17
Set 2 started more or less the same for both teams, kills from Reid, Anderson, and Lorena gave the Warriors a slim 4-3 lead. Webber would score three of the next five points, highlighted by a kill from Vivianne Cancio to take a 7-5 lead over the Patriots. This would be the last lead the Warriors had, however, as the Patriots were able to storm back going on a 20-7 run throughout the rest of the set. Webber did not have an answer for the Patriots' attack, and the University of the Cumberlands took set 2 25-14.
Webber competed early in set 3, taking a 5-3 lead highlighted by blocks from Reid, Lorena, and Bolser, and a kill from Araujo. Both teams would then be tied at 6, 7, and 8, as neither team was able to hold onto a lead. The Patriots would soon go on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 14-8 before Coach Dee called a timeout to stop the run. Webber got three of the next four, thanks in part to Bolser and Lorena, to bring the score to 15-11. The Warriors and Patriots each went on three-point runs to put the score at 18-14 before the Patriots took a timeout to try and quell the Warriors momentum. The Patriots took 7 of the next 12 points scored, capitalizing on multiple Warrior errors to take set 3 25-19
Webber again held an early 3-2 lead over the Patriots thanks in part to two errors and a kill from Bolser. UC would score four straight to take a 6-3 before Webber answered back with two of their own, highlighted by a kill from Anderson to make the score 6-5. The Patriots rattled off 9 of the next 11 points, sandwiching two kills from Wilhite, extending their lead to 15-7. Webber was able to get within 5, thanks to kills from Reid, Crow, Anderson, and Lorena with the score of 18-13. Both teams traded the next four points, keeping the deficit at five with the score now 20-15. UC scored four of the next seven points to force match point at 24-18. Webber showed some signs of life, getting kills from both Reid and Anderson, forcing a Patriots timeout. The Patriots took set 4 with a score of 25-20 and won the match 3-1.
Reid led the Warriors with 10 kills while Wilhite and and Anderson both had 9. Araujo added 18 assists and Crow had 16. Defensively, Lorena and Bolser led the way with 9 and 8 blocks respectively, while Tisdale led the team with 23 points.
