WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (May 6, 2023) - The Webber International University baseball team took on No. 18 Ave Maria University on day two of The Sun Conference tournament on Friday night. The Warriors outlasted the Gyrenes in a gritty 2-1 victory for back-to-back wins.
Starting on the bump for the Warriors (39-13 overall) was sophomore
Dylan Martin, earning the victory and improving his overall season record to 10-1. He allowed just one run on eight hits and recorded seven strikeouts in the process.
Dawson Young closed out the final inning to earn his eighth save of the year.
The Warriors took an early one run lead in the bottom of the first on a double down the left field line by
Luis Acevedo, which scored
Drake Dobyanski. There would then be three scoreless frames by both teams before Webber added what ended up being a crucial run in the fifth inning as Dobyanski scored yet again to extend the lead to 2-0. The Warriors got into some hot water in the eighth inning, allowing a run to score and with two outs, the Gyrenes had runners on first and third.
Xavier Rodriguez entered the game to deliver the final out and limit the damage to just the one run.
Webber recorded five hits in total for the game, all of which came off the bats of Acevedo and Brody Neveker. Acevedo ended the game 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Neveker was 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Next up, the Warriors will face No. 1 Southeastern University on Saturday, May 6th. It is a double-elimination tournament with both teams being currently unbeaten to this point.
