Softball Opens Series against Gyrenes with 9-0 Victory

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 14, 2023) – The Webber International University softball team opened another Sun Conference series on Friday at home, this time against Ave Maria University. The Warriors tallied their most runs in a single game so far this season in a 9-0 run-rule victory over the Gyrenes.

Taylor Thomas earned the nod for Webber (11-26 overall, 5-14 SUN), tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just one hit to the Gyrenes (18-19, 5-11) while tallying five strikeouts.

The Warriors scored twice in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a pass ball and an RBI-groundout by Maddie Houtz. Another run crossed in the second inning as Samantha Proctor delayed a steal to home while a runner got in a pickle between first and second.

Webber broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with six more runs. First, Chloe Rayner singled to left field to score Proctor before another single by Hayley Saylor through the right side scored another. A single up the middle by Brandy Barquin brought home two more runs before Houtz delivered a two-run shot to left-center field, extending the lead to 9-0.

All five hits for the Warriors came from different batters, led by Houtz who ended 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI's. Barquin also finished 1-for-3 and tallied two RBI's. Saylor ended 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI while Rayner and Dejia Benn were both 1-for-1.

The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. on Nancy Nichols Field.
