Warriors Complete Series Sweep of Ave Maria

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 16, 2023) - The Webber International University softball team continued the three-game series against Ave Maria University on Saturday with a doubleheader. The Warriors earned the sweep against the Gyrenes after taking two-run victories in games two and three.

Jenna Chaudoin took to the pitchers circle for the first game of the doubleheader, earning a complete-game victory as she tossed 7.0 innings and tallying seven punch-outs.

The Gyrenes (18-21 overall, 5-13 SUN) scored early on in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly but Webber (13-26, 7-14 SUN) responded in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk drawn by Chloe Rayner. Ave Maria tallied another run in the second inning but were held scoreless from that point on. The Warriors once again equalized in the bottom half of the second and took the lead the following inning as Johnkira Bland doubled to center field, scoring Alycia Celia. Webber later added another insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI-single by Rayner.

Kimmie Cheung ended the game 2-for-4 with a run scored while Rayner finished 1-for-2 with two RBI's. Aubrey Brown, Brandy Barquin, and Samantha Proctor all recorded hits as well.

Freshman-pitcher Taylor Thomas earned the start in the second game of the day. She threw a complete game as well and allowed just one run and two hits through seven innings while recording five strikeouts.

Just as in the first game, the Gyrenes took no time getting themselves on the board after scoring on an RBI-single in the top of the first. They held that lead until the fifth inning where Barquin delivered a single to center field which scored Celia to tie the game at one apiece. The next inning, the Warriors took the lead after Nicole Gutierrez brought home two runs on a single to right field in a pinch-hitting appearance.

Gutierrez ended the game 1-for-1 with a pair of RBI's followed by Barquin who was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Bland and Dejia Benn recorded the only other two hits for the Warriors as they closed out the narrow 3-1 victory to complete the sweep.

Next up, Webber will return to non-conference action next week as they first take on Florida National University on Monday, April 17th followed by a doubleheader against No. 10 Georgia Gwinnett College on Saturday, April 22nd.
