Softball Drops Three to St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 10, 2023) - The Webber International University softball team took on the Bobcats of St. Thomas University in a three-game Sun Conference series this past weekend. The Warriors struggled to get the bats going over the course of the series as the Bobcats earned the three-game sweep.

The opening game of the series ended after five innings as St. Thomas tallied four runs in the first and four in the third to take an early 8-0 lead. The Warriors scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI-single to left field by Kimmie Cheung. Both Cheung and Hayley Saylor ended 2-for-3 for the game while Brandy Barquin, Samantha Proctor, and Gracie Lopez all finished 1-for-2.

Saturday's doubleheader saw the Warriors get shut out in both games despite solid pitching performances from Jenna Chaudoin in game two and Taylor Thomas in game three. Chaudoin tossed 6.0 innings and allowed just three runs on three hits. The Bobcats took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning and added one more run in the sixth. Genesis Aviles had two of Webber's three total hits in the game with the other coming from Cheung.

Thomas gave up just two runs in game three and tallied seven strikeouts in total. St. Thomas scored one in the first inning and another in the fifth. Both teams recorded six hits, however, Webber left seven runners on base. Barquin finished game three 2-for-3 with a double, the only Warrior with multiple hits and the only extra-base-hit of the game as well. Nicole Gutierrez, Johnkira Bland, Cheung and Saylor all recorded singles.

The Warriors will now return home for the final 10 games of the regular season, all of which will be played at Nancy Nichols Field. Webber will first host Ave Maria University in a three-game conference series which will begin on Friday, April 14th at 3 p.m. with a doubleheader the following day at 11 and 1 p.m.
