POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. (March 9, 2023) – The Webber International University men's lacrosse team matched up against Lawrence Tech University on Thursday afternoon. A big second=-half performance propelled the Warriors to a 20-10 victory over the Blue Devils.
The game was nearly even in terms of shots between the Warriors (8-1 overall) and Blue Devils (1-1) with LTU having the slight advantage, 38-36. However, Webber recorded a total of 15 saves compared to the seven of Lawrence Tech.
Christian Tapia opened the scoring for the Warriors with a solo-effort to take the early 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils responded with back-to-back goals just seven seconds apart in order to take the lead. Webber then scored four in a row that included a pair of goals from
Dillon Ziemba, to retake the lead at 5-2.
The Blue Devils scored just before the end of the first quarter and proceeded to score twice more to open quarter number two, tying the game at 5-5. Three goals by the Warriors, two from freshman
Jeremiah Loo, in a span of a minute and a half gave Webber the advantage once again. LTU pulled back within one but another goal from Loo followed by
Chase Jackson's second of the game extended the lead back to three at 10-7.
The Warriors came out hot after halftime, scoring the first four goals of the third quarter and extending their lead to 14-8. Webber allowed just two goals in the entirety of the second half as it outscored the Blue Devils 5-1 in both the third and fourth quarters.
Offensively, the Warriors were led by Loo who tallied six goals and two assists for a total of eight points. He added two ground balls and a caused turnover as well. Three Warriors ended with five points each including Jackson, Tapia, and
Cade McCarron, all with three goals and two assists. Freshman
Nick Sheaffer posted one goal and two assists while Ziemba had two goals on the day.
Hunter Scott and
Joshua Cargile were both effective from the spot as they ended 17-of-25 and 6-of-7 on face-offs respectively. Scott led the team in ground balls with nine followed by
Austin Schepers with six.
Cameron Paleski,
Jordan Elam, and
Cade Bullard all led the team in caused turnovers with two each.
Next up, Webber will return home for the first time this season in order to battle the Knights of St. Andrews University on Saturday, March 11th at 1 p.m.
