No. 9 Warriors Drop One to Blue Devils, 5-3

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 7, 2023) - The Webber International University baseball team played its sixth game in seven days on Tuesday afternoon against the visiting Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech University. The Warriors fell by a narrow margin of 5-3, in what was just their fourth loss of the season so far.

Jacob Burr earned his third appearance of the season for the Warriors (20-4 overall), getting the start and tossing four innings in which he allowed two runs on three hits and posted six strikeouts. He was later relieved by a combination of Thomas Lopez Jr., Casey Lawson, Thomas Nelson, and Gabriel Dorsey.

Lawrence Tech (4-9) took no time getting to work as it scored two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Warriors were kept scoreless until the fifth inning, when Brody Neveker doubled to left-center field, scoring Tavion Williams. Neveker later scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to level the game at 2-2. The Blue Devils responded in the next half inning with a bases-clearing double down the left field line, regaining them the lead at 5-2. Webber added one more run in the eighth thanks to an RBI-single by Josh Blackmore, but were unable to close the gap any further.

The Warriors were led by Neveker who ended the day 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Ian Kalman finished 1-for-2 while Blackmore was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Angel Diaz was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base as well.

The University of St. Francis returns to Brad Niethammer Field tomorrow, March 8th for a single-game matchup against the Warriors at 3 p.m. Webber then has just one day off before the start of a three-game series against Aquinas College which begins on Friday, March 10th.
