BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 6, 2023) - The Webber International University baseball team opened a busy spring break schedule with a doubleheader against the University of St. Francis on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors earned two victories after allowing just one run across both games, 5-0 and 8-1.
Xavier Rodriguez threw a complete game shutout in game one while holding the Saints (5-10 overall) to just three hits and recording six punch-outs in total. The Warriors (19-3) posted five runs on five hits for the game.
It was a pitcher's duel through five and a half innings as the Warriors broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a bases-loaded three-RBI double to left-center field by
Angel Diaz.
Jakob Jackson followed that up with a single down the right field line which brought home A. Diaz. Webber scored its fifth and final run on a sacrifice bunt from Hector Alvarez.
Tyren Milliner,
Drake Dobyanski, and
Bryan Morales all finished 1-for-2 for the game. Milliner delivered a double to right-center while Dobyanski and Morales each scored a run as well. A. Diaz led the Warriors offensively however, going 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and three RBI's.
Dylan Martin earned the start in game number two as he earned his fifth victory on the year thus far. Martin turned in four quality innings in which he allowed no runs on five hits and struck out six along the way. He was relieved by a combination of
Gabriel Dorsey,
Thomas Lopez Jr. and
Casey Lawson who all pitched an inning each.
Unlike in game one, Webber did not take long to get on the board as a double from Morales in the first inning scored Dobyanski for the first run of the game. A. Diaz then brought home another on a groundout to the shortstop, earning the Warriors an early 2-0 lead. A. Diaz delivered RBI-singles in each of the third and fifth innings as well to extend the lead to 4-1. Webber put the game to bed in the sixth inning after adding four more runs which included a solo home run from
Luis Acevedo and a two-RBI double from
Josh Blackmore.
A. Diaz led the Warriors once again as he was 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a pair of stolen bases. Blackmore ended 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI's as Acevedo finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a team-high three runs scored.
The Warriors will now face Bryant & Stratton College (Albany, N.Y.) today, March 6th at 4 p.m. followed by a matchup against Lawrence Tech the following day, March 7th at 1 p.m.
