BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 19, 2023) - The Webber International University softball team hosted Florida Memorial University for its home Sun Conference opener on Friday and Saturday. The Warriors and Lions split on Friday in tight games before Webber won comfortably in game three to win the series.
Game one was a pitchers duel as there were just four hits in total for the game, two for the Warriors (8-16 overall, 2-4 SUN) and two for the Lions (7-8).
Taylor Thomas tossed all eight innings as she earned another complete-game shutout with no runs on two hits and eight strikeouts as well. The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning after
Jenna Chaudoin walked it off with a single up the middle that scored
Gracie Lopez.
Game two was equally as competitive as Chaudoin got the start in the circle for the Warriors. She allowed two runs on four hits and posted six punch-outs along the way.
All of the scoring came in the first inning as the Lions took an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first. The Warriors scored once on a sacrifice fly to left field by
Johnkira Bland which brought home Chaudoin to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Webber was held scoreless for the remainder of the game, however, and fell in game two.
The Warriors had just three hits in total for the game, a single from each of
Brandy Barquin and
Maddie Houtz as well as a double by
Genesis Aviles.
Saturday's third and final game saw a bit more scoring as the Warriors earned the 6-2 victory.
Victoria Nearing and Thomas split the game nearly in half on the mound, combining to allow just two runs on six hits. Thomas tallied six strikeouts in her 3.2 innings on the mound.
FMU walked a run home in the first inning to hand the Warriors the early lead. Webber posted four more runs in the second inning including an RBI-single by Aviles and a two-RBI double to left-center by Houtz that scored both Aviles and
Kimmie Cheung. The Warriors added one more insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by
Samantha Proctor.
Next up, the Warriors travel to Georgia to face Thomas University with a single game on Friday, March 24th followed by a doubleheader the following day on Saturday, March 25th.
