LAKELAND, Fla. (March 18, 2023) - The Webber International University baseball team opened Sun Conference play with a three-game series against No. 1 Southeastern University on Friday and Saturday. The Warriors came agonizingly close to a victory in game three but fell just short in what ended as a three-game sweep to the Fire.
The Warriors (24-7 overall, 0-3 SUN) and Fire (30-1, 3-0) competed in a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday.
Webber took an early lead in game one after a two-run homerun to left field by
Luis Acevedo in the top of the first. It did not last long, however, as the Fire responded with two two-run homeruns in the bottom half to take the lead at 4-2. Southeastern added four more in the second inning and continued to extend its lead from there in a 17-7 victory.
Angel Diaz was a bright spot for the Warriors offensively as he finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI's and two runs scored.
Tommy Diaz finished 2-for-4 with a walk while Dobyanski ended 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Game two was unfortunately more of the same as Webber mustered just two runs in total. Both of which scored off of a double to center field by
Ian Kalman.
The Warriors had just four hits for the game, two of which came from Acevedo who ended 2-for-4. Dobyanski was 1-for-2 with two walks with Kalman delivering the only extra-base hit, going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI's.
Game three was competitive throughout as
Dylan Martin held the Fire to just one run on three hits and striking out five through five innings of work.
Dawson Young closed out the final three innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
Southeastern scored the first run of the game in the first inning and held the 1-0 lead until inning number six in which Dobyanski doubled to right-center field, scoring
Tavion Williams to tie the game. An RBI-double by A. Diaz in the top of the eight inning scored Dobyanski and gave the Warriors the 2-1 lead. The Fire delivered a two-run walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth, however, to steal the victory late on.
Dobyanski finished 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored followed by A. Diaz who was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Webber now has a week-long break before returning home to host No. 25 Keiser University in a three-game series on Friday, March 24th and Saturday, March 25th.
