JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (February 9, 2023) - The Webber International University men's volleyball team matched up against Division-II Edward Waters University on Thursday evening in what was its first non-conference match of the season. The Warriors were competitive in all three sets but were swept 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-21) by the Tigers.
Along with being the first non-conference match of the season, it was also the first road-matchup for the Warriors (2-1 overall). The Tigers (2-1) displayed their offensive firepower earning double-digit kills in all three set including 18 in the second and third sets.
Webber took an early 3-1 lead in the first set but Edward Waters quickly got settled in and went on an 8-2 run which earned it a four-point advantage at 9-5. The Warriors kept it close and trailed by just two at 13-11 before another 8-2 run by the Tigers extended their lead to 21-13. With an eight-point lead, Edward Waters was able to close out the set-one victory.
Again the Warriors would start the set of well, leading 5-2 early on in the second set. Webber maintained its lead up to 8-6 before the home team caught fire and went on a 7-0 run that earned them a 13-8 lead. The Warriors did well to battle back to within two points on several occasions, but trailing 20-18, Edward Waters then scored five-straight to take a big 2-0 lead.
Trailing heavily at 19-13 late in the final set, the Warriors then went on a 5-1 run which brought them back to within two once again. Webber was unable to close the gap further as the Tigers went on to seal the victory.
Jackson Arnold led the Warriors in kills with five followed by
Lachlan Diamond with four and
Gunter Perea Quevedo and
Carson Barnes each with three.
Peyten Young finished with a team-high 15 assists and added three digs while Vicor Siqueira totaled six assists.
Kennette Esquilin tied with Arnold for the most digs on the team with four apiece. Perea Quevedo also finished with a team-high three solo blocks for the match.
The Warriors have a quick turnaround as they continue their road trip to Truett McConnell University for a match against the Bears on Friday, February 10th at 7 p.m.
