Men's Basketball Unable to Outlast Fire

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 4, 2023) - The Webber International University men's basketball team played host to Southeastern University on Saturday evening inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The Warriors were unable to keep up with the Fire in the second half and fell for the second game in a row, 68-59.

Southeastern (13-12 overall, 9-4 SUN) shot 44.8 percent and were a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line for the game. Webber (15-9, 8-4) was limited to 35.6 percent shooting in total and was out-rebounded slightly, 37-34.

The Warriors had a strong start to the game as they gradually developed a lead of as many as 10 points roughly 10 minutes into the first half. A 7-0 run by the Fire quickly cut the lead to just three points and a little over a minute later, they tied the game up at 21. Momentum swung back in the direction of Webber as an 8-0 run earned it a five-point lead after trailing 26-23. The Fire regained the lead once again at 32-31 before Jyshaun Melvin drilled a deep three with seconds remaining to take 34-32 lead at the half.

Southeastern took a one-point lead just a few minutes into the second half. Trailing 41-40, a three-point shot from Eddie Davis regained the lead for the Warriors. Webber led 47-43 with 11 minutes left in the game before the Fire went off on a 10-0 run that earned them a six-point advantage. That was the last time the Warriors would hold the lead in the game as Southeastern increased its lead to as many as nine points. Webber tried to chip away at the deficit but unfortunately fell short in the end.

Leading the way for Webber was Davis with team-highs in points with 18, steals with two, and blocks with one .He added six rebounds and tied with Melvin for the most assists with three. K'Shun Stokes finished the game with 12 points and led the team in rebounds with eight. Melvin recorded 11 points while Tyrone Nesby IV came off the bench to contribute eight points. Jordan Golden ended with five points and six rebounds.

Webber now looks ahead to its next game which will be against Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia on Thursday, February 9th at 7:30 p.m. The Warriors will then match up against the Mariners of the College of Coastal Georgia in the home-rendition of their series on Saturday, February 11th at 4 p.m.
