BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 4, 2023) - The Webber International University women's basketball team has now won three of its last four games after stunning Southeastern University 70-69 on Saturday afternoon in the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The win snapped a six-game win streak that the Fire had going, dating back to January 7th.
Outstanding team-defense was the name of the game for the Warriors (8-14 overall, 5-7 SUN) as they held Southeastern (12-11, 9-4) to just 34.7 percent shooting from the floor. Webber also controlled the paint as they outscored the Fire, 50-30, on points in the paint.
Thanks to a corner-three from
Alexandria Lemmon, the Warriors jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. They went cold, however, as the Fire went on a 9-0 run to earn a 12-7 lead over the next four minutes. Tied at 12 with two minutes remaining in the quarter, a 6-0 run by Webber established a six-point lead heading into quarter number two.
Southeastern found its form offensively in the second quarter as the Fire scored 25 points on 45.5 percent shooting. The Warriors were held to 25 percent shooting and 12 points in total, eight of which came by way of
Jaida Burgess. A strong second quarter earned the Fire a 37-30 advantage at the halftime break.
It took just over four minutes, but the Warriors were able to cut the deficit to just four points. Southeastern reestablished its seven-point lead at 47-40 before back-to-back layups from
Alisha Walker cut the lead to just three with 1:22 on the clock. Roughly a minute later,
Triniti Lee drilled a three-pointer to tie the game up at 48. The Fire led by one heading into the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter proved to be neck and neck the whole way through. The game was tied on multiple occasions at 54, 56, 57, 61, and 66 over the course of the final quarter. Tied at 66,
Jermasia Klopsis then hit a close-range jumper before stealing the ball on the next possession and converting a layup to give Webber a four-point lead. A three by Southeastern cut the lead to just one but the Fire were unable to regain the lead with a last desparation three-point attempt.
Burgess ended the game one rebound shy of a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds in total. She was followed by
Samantha Pacheco with 13 points, six assists, six rebounds, and two steals. Klopsis came off the bench to score 10 points as she recorded double-digit scoring for just the second time so far this season. She also added three rebounds, two steals, and a block. Walker recorded nine points and nine rebounds in just 13 minutes of action while
Rushell Jacob finished with eight points, six rebounds, and a block.
The Warriors will now travel to Georgia to take on Thomas University for the second time this season on Thursday, February 9th at 5:30 p.m. They will return home for another conference game against the College of Coastal Georgia the following Saturday, February 11th at 2 p.m.
