Second-Half Struggles Plague Warriors

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (February 2, 2023) - The Webber International University women's basketball team faced Keiser University for the second time this season on Thursday evening. The Warriors led for the majority of the first half but a strong third quarter from the Seahawks earned them the victory, 64-47.

Both teams struggled offensively as the Warriors (7-14 overall, 4-7 SUN) and Seahawks (14-11, 5-8) both shot under 30 percent in total. Keiser dominated the glass, out-rebounding Webber 52-39.

It was a defensive game in the first half as the Warriors held Keiser to shooting under 20 percent. Webber held a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter and led by five points with just under two minutes left in the half. The Seahawks converted a free throw and a three-pointer just before the buzzer to cut the lead to just one.

The two sides battled back-and-forth over the opening few minutes of the third quarter as there were seven lead changes in the first three minutes. The Seahawks took the lead on a three-point shot and ran with the momentum from that point on as they built a lead of as many as 16 points. Keiser held a 14-point lead heading into the final quarter of play and held off the Warriors' hopes of a comeback.

Jaida Burgess led the Warriors as she tallied her fifth double-double of the season with team-highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Her 13 boards also ties her season-high as well. She was followed by Samantha Pacheco who ended the night with 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. The next highest scorer was Dasia Wandick with five points as she added four rebounds, two steals, and a block as well.

Webber will now return home to take on the Fire of Southeastern University on Saturday, Februray 4th at 2 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The Warriors fell to the Fire back in December in a tight 81-76 game in Lakeland, Florida.
