Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (February 3, 2023) - The Webber International University men's basketball team battled Keiser University in a Sun Conference clash for the second time this season on Thursday night. The Warriors fought to get themselves back in the game but fell short in a heart-breaking 95-89 overtime loss.
The Warriors (15-8 overall, 8-3 SUN) shot 46.4 percent from the floor in total but just 30 percent from beyond the arc while the Seahawks shot 52.9 percent in total and 34.6 percent from three. Keiser made the difference by scoring 50 of their points in the paint while Webber managed just 36.
The game started off well for the Warriors as they developed a 13-6 lead over the opening five minutes. A quick 10-2 run from Keiser over the next two minutes, however, eliminated that lead and earned the Seahawks a one-point advantage. Webber's offense became stagnant as Keiser continued to score and build its lead up to 17 points with just over three minutes left in the half.
The Warriors trailed by 15 with 1:25 on the clock before a 7-0 run to end the half cut the lead to just eight.
Tyrone Nesby IV knocked down a jumper followed by a layup from
K'Shun Stokes on the following possession.
Gavin Buchanon then stole the ball on the ensuing in-bound play from Keiser and dished it out to
Jyshaun Melvin for a quick three with just a few seconds left.
The Seahawks extended their lead back to 12 after the first few minutes of the second half but a three-point shot from
Eddie Davis followed by another Stokes layup cut the deficit to just six. Webber eventually cut the lead yet further to four, but Keiser responded and extended it to nine after a 5-0 run. Down by seven with less than three minutes left, Davis then drilled a three-pointer, stole the in-bound pass and knocked down another to single-handedly cut the lead to one at 79-78. Trailing 81-80, Nesby IV would be fouled and go to the line with six seconds on the clock where he converted one of his two attempts to force overtime.
Webber fell behind quickly and trailed by four after just the first minute. The Warriors pulled back within two on a couple of occasions but were unable to regain the lead as they suffered just their third conference-defeat of the season.
Stokes led the Warriors in both points with 25 and assists with three. He added six rebounds and a steal as well while shooting 53.3 percent. He was followed by Nesby IV who tallied 22 points in his Warrior-debut and added six rebounds and two assists. Davis finished with 17 points and was three-of-six from downtown while leading the team in steals with three. Melvin recorded 10 points, which all came in the first half and two assists as well.
Jordan Golden ended with a team-high eight rebounds and added six points.
Chinecherem Anukaenyi was a force on the defensive end as he racked up three blocks.
The Warriors will now prepare for their game against Southeastern University on Saturday, February 4th at 4 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. It will be a blackout game so fans in attendance are encouraged to wear black.
