BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 12, 2023) - The Webber International University women's basketball team extended its win streak to three on Saturday afternoon with a victory over the College of Coastal Georgia. Burgess scored 26 and tallied a double-double as the Warriors toppled the Mariners, 65-57.
The Warriors (10-14 overall, 7-7 SUN) shot an even 40 percent from the field and forced the Mariners (6-19, 4-11) into a total of 23 turnovers. With the victory, Webber completes the season sweep and has now won the last four meetings against CCG.
Webber started the game well and quickly led 6-0 after the opening six minutes. It was a low-scoring first quarter, but the Warriors were able to extend their lead to 14-6 heading into quarter number two. Trailing 17-6, the Mariners found their groove offensively as they then went on a 15-4 run over the next five and half minutes, tying the game up at 21. The Warriors were able to regain the lead and held a four -point advantage at halftime, 30-26.
It was a strong third quarter from the Warriors' defense as they clamped down and allowed just 11 points. Webber outscored the Mariners and extended its lead to nine points as they enetered the final quarter of action. A three-pointer by Coastal Georgia with just under four minutes left cut the deficit to just one point at 53-52. However, the Warriors responded with an 8-0 run to regain their nine-point lead.
Burgess recorded 26 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. She posted single-game career-highs in both fre throws attempted (17) and free throws made (13) while adding five assists and five steals. She was followed by
Alexandria Lemmon with 11 points and eight rebounds and
Triniti Lee who came off the bench to score 11 points and added a block and a steal as well.
Samantha Pacheco posted seven points, four assists, and four steals on the day.
The Warriors are now down to their final two games of the season as they first host St. Thomas University for Senior Day on Thursday, February 16th at 5:30 p.m. Webber then closes out the regular-season on the road against Florida Memorial University on Saturday, February 18th at 2 p.m.
