BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 16, 2023) - The Webber International University women's basketball team is heating up at the right time of year as it completed a 78-70 upset of St. Thomas University on Thursday evening inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The Warriors have now won four in a row and six of their last seven, all conference games.
The Warriors (11-14 overall, 8-7 SUN) shot very efficiently, 47.6 percent in total, and crashed the boards hard as they out-rebounded the Bobcats (21-7, 12-4) 46-28.
Tied at six, the Warriors went on a 11-3 run that saw them take an eight-point lead with three and a half minutes left in the first quarter. A 7-0 run by St. Thomas to close out the quarter cut the deficit to just three at 19-16. A 9-1 run by Webber to open the second quarter saw it take a commanding 11-point lead. The Warriors extended their lead to as many as 17 but led by 13 at the halftime break. Webber shot over 50 percent for the quarter and limited St. Thomas to shooting just 38.5 percent.
The Bobcats cut the deficit to 11 after the opening few minutes but Webber quickly responded by increasing the lead to 17 and eventually as many as 19 at 60-41 with three minutes left in the quarter. The Warriors held a healthy lead of 17 entering the final quarter of play. Taking their time with each possession, it was all about game management. But St. Thomas did not back down, it slowly chipped away at the deficit until it was just a six-point game. The Warriors did well to increase the gap back to double digits and seal the victory and their place in The Sun Conference Tournament.
Jaida Burgess recorded her seventh double-double of the season as she posted team-highs in both points with 24 and rebounds with 11. She also tied for the team-high of five assists with
Samantha Pacheco.
Rushell Jacob finished with 13 points and three rebounds while Pacheco added 12 points, three rebounds, and two steals.
Alexandria Lemmon came one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds, and added four assists as well.
Dasia Wandick had a solid game, contributing with 10 points, six rebounds and a block in 17 minutes of action.
The Warriors have now played their final home game of the regular season but will have to travel to Miami Gardens, Florida to take on the Lions of Florida Memorial University on Saturday, February 18th at 2 p.m.
