BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 12, 2023) - The Webber International University men's basketball team suffered its fourth-straight defeat on Saturday evening at the hands of the College of Coastal Georgia. The Warriors fought to get themselves back into the game multiple times but to no avail as they fell 70-63 to the visiting Mariners.
The Warriors (15-11 overall, 8-6 SUN) dominated the paint as they outscored the Mariners (6-18, 4-11) 36-20 on points in the paint. Coastal Georgia had an even spread of scoring as the bench contributed 39 points compared to the eight points off the bench from Webber.
It was a very defensive start to the game as baskets were few and far between for both teams. The Mariners led just 7-2 after the opening five and a half minutes of the game. Coastal Georgia eventually extended its lead to as many as 13 points at 24-11 with three and a half minutes left in the half.
K'Shun Stokes and
Eddie Davis combined to score the final nine points of the half for the Warriors as they cut the lead to single digits and trailed 29-20 at the half.
Trailing 35-22, Webber then went on an 11-2 run which brought it back to within four points at 37-33. The Mariners responded with a run of their own which extended the lead to nine before the Warriors once again went on another run. This time a 12-0 run which was capped by a dunk from
Tyrone Nesby IV, handing Webber its first lead of the game. It held the lead only briefly, however, as Coastal Georgia came back to retake the lead and extend it to as many as 10 with just 13 seconds left.
Webber was led by Stokes with 26 points on 50 percent shooting while adding eight rebounds and two steals. Nesby IV earned his first start of the season and totaled 18 points, three rebounds, and a block. They were followed by Davis with nine points and
Tiyon Martin with seven.
Jordan Golden contributed with six points and five rebounds in total.
The Warriors will now prepare for their final home game of the season which will be Senior Day on Thursday, February 16th at 7:30 p.m. against the Bobcats of St. Thomas University.
