Lake Wales, FL –The Webber International Women's Basketball team squared off against the Cumberland Phoenix on the second day of the Warner Classic. The Warriors were in it the entire game, but a late run from the Phoenix gave Cumberland the edge over Webber, 65-58.
Jermaisia Klopsis got the scoring started for the Warriors, netting a layup to tie the game 2-2. Triniti Lee got a jumper to fall off a feed from Nina Goncalves. Alisha Walker was the next Warrior to score before Goncalves got on the board herself, to keep Webber within single digits of the Phoenix, 17-8. Walker was sent to the charity stripe and sank one of two before Samantha Pacheco hit a jumper to end the first quarter with the Warriors down by nine, 20-11.
Pacheco, Kori Wimberly, and Lee started the scoring in the second quarter, with Wimberly connecting from three, to put the Warriors within four, 22-18. Goncalves hit one of two from the charity stripe before Pacheco and Walker each hit shots to bring the Warriors within two, 25-23. Goncalves hit one more shot before half as the Warriors headed into the third quarter down 29-25.
Pacheco scored first in the third quarter, getting a jump shot to fall as well as two free throws. Two jumpers by Walker sandwiched a Klopsis three-pointer. Goncalves hit a shot soon after to bring the score to 42-38. Lee got the last bucket to fall in the third quarter, as her three-point shot kept the Warriors within single digits, 49-41.
Klopsis hit a three to start the fourth, while Walker was sent to the line and hit one of two. Klopsis hit another layup before Goncalves hit a jumper to bring the Warriors deficit to three, 52-49. Pachecho turned defense into offense, scoring a layup off of a steal to bring Webber within one, before another basket from Klopsis stopped a Phoenix run at 57-53. Pacheco would score the final five points for the Warriors on two free throws and a three-pointer as the Warriors were unable to come back against the Phoenix, 65-58.
Pacheco led the team with 17 points, grabbing six rebounds and assisting on four makes. She added two steals as well. Klopsis added 12 points of her own, as well as one rebound and four assists. Walker had 10 points to go along with four rebounds, one block and one assist.
The Warriors will be back in action on Sunday, December 17th when they travel to West Palm Beach Florida to take on the Doane Tigers at the West Palm Beach Classic.
